LaMelo LaFrance Ball (born on August 22 2001) is an American professional basketball player who plays for the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Hornets chose him as the third overall selection during the 2020 NBA draft. Ball was named the NBA Rookie-of-the-Year in 2021, and was also named an NBA All-Star in 2022. He attended Chino Hills High school in Chino Hills, California. In Chino Hills, he was a state champion and also had national success as a freshman along with his brothers Lonzo and LiAngelo. Before his junior season the dispute with the coach led him to quit Chino Hills and sign with Lithuanian professional team Prienai. In 2018, he was a player in the Junior Basketball Association (JBA) which was a league founded by his father, before going back to school as a senior with SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio. Ball was a five-star recruit who committed to UCLA. However the issue of eligibility caused him to join the Illawarra Hawks in the National Basketball League (NBL). He enjoyed a meteoric rise there. Before, scouts mocked Ball as a second round pick and likely never making it into the NBA. But his performance has led to him being selected as the third pick by the Charlotte Hornets in the 2020 NBA draft. Following the 2020-21 NBA season, Ball was selected as the NBA Rookie of the Year.Ball and his brothers have received attention from the nation since they played together at high school. His father, LaVar, also grew into a media personality in 2017. Ball has a shoe that is exclusive made by his father's firm, Big Baller Brand, and a role in the family's Facebook Watch reality show Ball in the Family. His older brother Lonzo Ball plays for the Chicago Bulls.
