Cutkosky began making photo ads at the age of four years old to provide an opportunity for his mother and him to spend time together. After a few commercials Cutkosky was asked to audition for commercials and movies. At the age of seven old, Cutkosky was offered his first movie role in the role of Carl in the Christmas comedy Fred Claus (2007). Cutkosky aged nine years old, played the character of Barto a mythical creature who appeared in The Unborn (2009). He also got the chance to perform alongside Gary Oldman. In 2009, Cutkosky was chosen to portray Carl Gallagher, the second-youngest Gallagher sibling, and the most problem-maker. Emmy Rossum, William H. Macy and Cutkosky are the show's main characters. Shameless ran for eleven seasons until 2021, and is currently the longest running original scripted Showtime series in its history
