Naomi Campbell

Campbell's career grew steadily over the years. Campbell walked catwalks of designers such as Gianni Versace and Azzedine Almaia and was photographed by Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber. [10] By the late 1980s, Campbell, with Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, had formed a group known as the "Trinity",[10and became the most well-known and sought-after models of their generation. When confronted by discrimination on the basis of race, Campbell received support from her white friends. She later quoted Turlington and Evangelista as telling Dolce & Gabbana, "If you don't choose Naomi, you don't get us. [16] She was the first woman of color to grace the cover of British Vogue's December issue in 1987. In August 1988 she became the first model of black to grace the cover of French Vogue after the designer, Yves St. Laurent, threatened to withdraw his advertising from the publication if it did not include Naomi on the cover. 19] She was featured on American Vogue's cover in the year following. It was the result of Yves St. Laurent threatened to withdraw his advertising from the magazine if Naomi Campbell did not appear on its cover. [21] They were then used as the lead models in the music video of George Michael's "Freedom!" '90". At the time, Campbell, Turlington, Evangelista, Crawford and Claudia Schiffer were part of an elite group of models declared "supermodels" by the fashion industry. [6] They were all collectively known as the "Big Six" following the time Kate Moss joined the ranks.
