Mike Pence

Pence successfully sought the Republican nomination for the 2012 Indiana gubernatorial election when the term-limit Mitch Daniels retired. Pence defeated the former Indiana House speaker John R. Gregg in the closest to a gubernatorial race in 50 years.Upon being elected governor in January of 2013, Pence initiated the largest tax cut in Indiana's history and pushed for more funding for private education programs. Pence approved bills to restrict abortions, including ones that banned abortions when the reason for the procedure was due to the fetus's gender, race, or disability. [6] After Pence signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, the bill was met with a fierce resistance from moderate members of his party and the business community and LGBT advocates. Pence was forced to amend the RFRA to ban discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation and other factors. This led to Pence's resignation from his gubernatorial reelection campaign. On January 20, 2017, he was elected vice president of United States. As vice president, Pence chaired the National Space Council since it was reestablished in June 2017. Pence was elected chairman of the White House Coronavirus Task Force in February 2020. The task force was created in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States.
