Hogan started his professional career as a wrestler in the year 1977. He was then contracted to the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE) in 1983. His reputation as an all-American hero helped to usher in the professional wrestling boom of the 1980s. He headlined eight of nine editions of Wrestlemania's initial nine editions. In his first year in the championship, he was crowned the WWF Championship five times, with his first reign being the longest in the championship's history. He was the first wrestler in history to win consecutive Royal Rumble matches. He took them both in 1990 and 1991. The match he had with Andre the Giant on WWF The Main Event on February 5, 1988 remains the holder of American television viewership records for wrestling with a 15.2 Nielsen rating and 33 million viewers. In 1993, Hogan departed the WWF to join the rival promotion World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Hogan was the winner of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship six times, and is the holder of the record for having the longest time in the competition.
