Lionel Andres Messi [note (Spanish pronunciation: [ljo'nel an'dres 'mesi] (listen); born on June 24, 1987) Also known as Leo Messi, is an Argentine professional footballer who plays forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and is captain of the Argentina national team. The Argentine is widely thought of as one the greatest football players ever. Messi won seven Ballon d'Or Awards, [note a record six European Golden Shoes] and was named to the Ballon d'Or Dream Team in 2020. He was a professional for the entirety of his life with Barcelona before he left the club in 2021. There, he won a club record 35 trophies which included 10 La Liga titles as well as seven Copa del Rey titles. He was the 2021 winner of the Copa America with his country as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Messi is a prolific goal scorer and a creative player. He holds records for the most goals scored in La Liga (474), the most hat-tricks scored in La Liga (36), and the UEFA Champions League (8). He also holds records for the highest assists in La Liga (192), the Copa America (17) and the UEFA Champions League (8). Messi also holds the record for the most international goals that are scored by the average South American male (98). Messi has more than 790 goals in his senior career for country and club, and is the player with the highest number of goals scored by a player for one club (672).
