After a stint of guest appearances on shows such as Always and Everyone, The Cops, Heartbeat and Clocking Off, Joyner came to fame after appearing as Beth Nicholls in Channel 4 comedy drama No Angels between 2004 and the year 2006. In 2006, she was featured in four episodes of North & South as Fanny Thornton and in two episodes of Doctor Who as Lynda Moss. In June 2006, Joyner began appearing as Tanya Branning in BBC One soap opera EastEnders. Joyner initially refused the role because she was unsure whether she could work in a soap opera. Joyner said, "It was a huge decision. I said no originally. The act of playing someone in soap is a huge risk. The soap is a sacred product. If you're not talented enough, you won't be able escape it. Joyner wasn't sure if the fame that EastEnders would bring after eight years of working quietly and well in the industry. Joyner was awarded the Most Popular Actress award at the Digital Spy Soap Awards in 2008 for her performance in Tanya and then was awarded the Best Dramatic Performance at the 2008 British Soap Awards, as being among the top four in the Best Actress category. Joyner was nominated for the Best Actress award at the All About Soap Awards in 2012[8] and was later awarded the award. Joyner and Jake Wood were the winners of the Best On-Screen Partnership category at the British Soap Awards 2012. Digital Spy's end of year reader poll, Joyner was nominated for Best Female Soap Actor and came fourth, with 13.4 percent of the votes.
