Elon Reeves Musk, FRS (/’i:lan/EE-lon) is an investor and business magnate. He was born on June 28, 1971. He is the founder, CEO and chief engineer of SpaceX as well as an angel investor. He is also the CEO and product designer of Tesla, Inc.; the owner and CEO of Twitter, Inc.; founder of The Boring Company; co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI; and the president of the charitable Musk Foundation. Musk is estimated to have a net worth of $139 billion, primarily because of his ownership stakes in Tesla and SpaceX. 4/5 Musk was born in Pretoria in South Africa and attended the University of Pretoria briefly before making the move to Canada when he was 18. He was granted Canadian citizenship through his mother. A few years later, he matriculated at Queen's University and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where the bachelor's degree he earned was in economics and physics. In 1995, he relocated to California to attend Stanford University. After two days, he walked out, and along with his brother Kimbal co-founded the internet-based city guide software company Zip2. Compaq purchased Zip2 for $307 million in 1999. Musk also co-founded X.com direct bank. X.com merged in 2000 with Confinity to form PayPal. eBay purchased PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002. Musk co-founded SpaceX, an aerospace service provider, in 2002, and was able to raise $175.8 million. In 2004 Musk was the first investor in the electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors, Inc. (now Tesla, Inc.). In 2008, he was appointed CEO and was also appointed chairman. In 2006, he helped in the creation of SolarCity which was a solar energy company which was later bought by Tesla and later renamed Tesla Energy. In 2015, he founded OpenAI, a nonprofit artificial intelligence research company. He was also the co-founder of Neuralink which creates brain-computer interfaces and The Boring Company. Musk has also proposed the hyperloop, a high-speed transport system called vactrain. Musk also proposed a hyperloop high-speed vactrain transportation system. Musk has been criticized for making false and unsubstantiated statements, and also for spreading COVID-19 misinformation. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit against Musk in the year 2018 after he falsely claiming that he had secured funding to private takeovers of Tesla. Musk quit as chairman of Tesla and agreed to pay a $20 million fine as part of an agreement to settle with the SEC.
