Her fame was based on her dual role as the eponymous characters in the Disney Channel comedy series Liv and Maddie in which she was awarded the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in Children's Programing. Cameron continued to work for the Disney Channel and portrayed Mal in the Descendants series (2015-2021). In 2016, Cameron played the role of Mal in the NBC live-television musical Hairspray Live!. From 2018 to 2019, she was Cher Horowitz in an off Broadway production of Clueless in 1995. In 2019, she made her London debut as Clara Johnson in The Light in the Piazza. Cameron also starred in Vengeance (2022), a comedy-thriller. In the year 2019 she made her debut on the London stage as Clara Johnson. She was the lead singer on the soundtrack album of Liv and Maddie (2015). The album also featured "If only" her first single. The album debuted on the US Billboard 200 and was certified gold. Cameron also participated in Descendants 2 (2017-2019). In 2019 she released her debut album, Bloodshot / Waste. The singer dropped "Boyfriend" in 2022. The song was a commercial success and reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was also certified platinum by RIAA.
