Charley Jordan

Charley Jordan, born July 11, 1890, and died on November 15 in 1954. He was an American St. Louis Blues singer, songwriter, guitarist and talent scout. His distinctive style was inspired by his rural roots. The Killer Blues Headstone Project placed a headstone in honor of Charley Jordan.Jordan recorded many singles with Vocalion and Decca between 1930 and 1937. He was also a part of a group of well-known bluesmen of the 1920s through the 1940s. Jordan played with Peetie Wheatstraw, Roosevelt Sykes, Casey Bill Weldon and Memphis Minnie. Famous for his "crisply solid guitar" and his "crisply firm guitar", he scored many of his biggest hits, which included "Keep it Clean" in the 1930s. Later in that decade, and well through the 1940s, he performed frequently with Big Joe WilliamIn 1928, Jordan was shot in the spine. This was due to his extramusical career as bootlegger. The result was an ongoing disability that led to him walking with crutches for the rest of his life (which is evident in the few photographs of Jordan available).Jordan died of violence or pneumonia in 1954 in St. Louis, Missouri.
