Anson Williams

Williams was born Anson William Heimlich to an Jewish family. His father, Haskell Heimlich legally changed the spelling of his name to "Heimlick" as opposed to Williams's uncle Dr. Henry Heimlich, the inventor of the Heimlich technique to treat choke victims. Williams was a student at Burbank High School, where he was captain of the track team and was a part of numerous school productions. He was featured in the McDonald's commercial in 1971 alongside John Amos. In 1972, Williams played Potsie Weber in the segment of the comedy-anthology show Love, American Style. Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) as well as Richie's mom Marion (Marion Ross) as well as a variety of others were introduced in the episode. (Only Williams, Howard, and Ross reprised their roles). The initial season of the brand new series, in which Williams was given second billing after Howard's, was mainly focused around Richie, Potsie, and their relationship. As the breakout character Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler) and Richie's mother, father, and sister became more well-known, Potsie was joined by Ralph Malph (Don Most, who was a secondary character in season one) as well as Potsie and Ralph became an inseparable pair.
