Sweeney made her TV debut at age five in a Kodak commercial. In the following year, she appeared featured in the episode "I I Can't Help Saying Goodbye" of the horror show Tales from the Darkside, portraying a child who was able to tell when her friends were about to die before their deaths. She was first seen on ABC's sitcom Family Man in 1988. The following year , she was cast as Christy McCray in Brand New Life. The miniseries, written by Chris Carter, aired on the network's Magical World of Disney October 1989. The miniseries featured Barbara Eden as Sweeney’s mother and Don Murray her new stepfather. While the show was considered for pick up, it was never produced. Sweeney was 16 years old when she played the role of Samantha "Sami" Brady on Days of Our Lives on NBC which was a show she loved. The society of the day held extremely negative opinions about weight during the 90s. Sweeney who was a US size 12 was not considered obese based on medical standards. But she was still bigger than her peers on TV, so it was a problem. She documented the media coverage and personal pain in her memoir from 2004 All The Days of My Life (So Far)
