Jayne Mansfield, born Vera Jayne Palmer Vera Jayne Palmer, born April 19, 1933 – June 29, 1967, was an American actor and singer. She was also a Playboy Playmate. A sex icon of the 1950s and early 1960s , while working with 20th Century Fox, Mansfield was famous for her well-publicized personal life and publicity stunts. Her film career was short-lived however she did have numerous box office successes and was awarded an Theatre World Award and a Golden Globe Award.Mansfield enjoyed success in the role of fictional actress Rita Marlowe in the Broadway production Will Success be a stumbling block for Rock Hunter? (1955-1956), which she played in the film adaptation (1957). Her other film performances include the musical comedy The Girl Can't Help It (1956) as well as the dramatic The Wayward Bus (1957) and the neo-noir Too Hot to Handle (1960), and the sex-comedy Promises! Promises! (1963) The film made Mansfield as the first significant American actress to appear in a scene that was not asexual in a post-silent era film.Mansfield took her professional name from her husband of the first time, public relations professional Paul Mansfield. She had three marriages with each ending in divorce, and had five children. It was reported that she was intimately involved with many men, including Robert and John F. Kennedy, her lawyer Samuel S. Brody, and Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli. She was 34 when she died in a car accident in New Orleans.
