Tucker began to showcase his stand-up talents as a comedian before an audience in local Atlanta comedy clubs until he decided to move to Los Angeles in 1990 to further develop his stand-up comedy career. Tucker appeared in Def Comedy Jam in 1992. He was also a regular performer on that show. In 1994, Tucker made his film debut with House Party 3 and received more recognition for his film with Ice Cube in Friday. In 1997, he appeared in two film The Fifth Element and Money Talks. Tucker also appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown as a supporting character. Tucker was also a part of Double-O Soul's spy comedy Double-O-Soul. In 1997, he played the character of James Carter, a LAPD detective in the martial action film Rush Hour. Following the success commercially of the first Rush Hour film, he held out for the sum of $20 million for Rush Hour 2, and was offered a salary of $25 million for Rush Hour 3. The latter film was part a $40 million two-movie contract with New Line Cinema that also included an unnamed future film. Rush Hour 3 was to pay 20% of his total gross. Tucker did not reprise the role as Smokey in Next Friday 2000 or Friday After Next 2002. He later stated that he didn't intend to encourage people to smoke marijuana. He also starred in the Michael Jackson video "You Rock My World" and also made appearances in Tupac Shakur’s "California Love". The 13th of February, 2009, Tucker was a participant in the NBA All-Star Weekend's Celebrity Game. Other notables who participated included rapper Master P, NBA Hall of Famers Clyde Drexler and Dominique Wilkins, wide receiver Terrell Owens, and four Harlem Globetrotters.Tucker was named in 2007 to play in the New Line drama film Mr. S: My Life with Frank Sinatra, directed by Brett Ratner and based on George Jacobs' autobiography about working as Frank Sinatra's valet in the Rat Pack era of 1953-68.In 2011, Tucker made a comeback to stand-up comedy. He was back on the film set the following year in Silver Linings Playbook with Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro. Tucker's performance in the film was highly praised by both audiences and critics alike.
