Diaz was an opponent in The Ultimate Fighter 5, which exclusively featured lightweights, competing on Jens Pulver's team. Diaz defeated Rob Emerson in the preliminary round by submission. In the quarterfinals, Corey Hill defeated Diaz by submitting a triangle choke. Diaz defeated Gray Maynard, a Team Penn member, through submission in the semis. He then went on to the finals in which he faced Manvel Gamburyan, a fellow teammate. After Gamburyan attempted a takedown, Diaz was dislocated his right shoulder, and had to submit to beat him. After the win, Diaz was crowned The Ultimate Fighter
