Murdock was the son of J.E. Murdock, a Louisiana native. Murdock and Willie Murdock. He has four sisters. Murdock was a 1964 graduate of LaGrange High School, Lake Charles. Murdock was a student at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Waxahachie (Texas), but he left after just three years. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Murdock had registered 76 songs to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
