Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr. (born on August 14, 1959) is an American former professional basketball player. Johnson is widely regarded as the greatest point-guard of all time has played for 13 years in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Johnson was a champion in colleges and high schools as well as being chosen by the Los Angeles Lakers first in the 1979 NBA draft. He led the team to five NBA championships during the Showtime era. Johnson suddenly resigned in the year 1991 after revealing that he had contracted HIV. However, he returned to play in 1992 All-Star Game and won the All-Star MVP Award. Following a protest by his teammates, Johnson retired for another four years. However, he returned to the All-Star game in 1992 at the age of 36 and played 32 games for the Lakers before resigning for the last time. Johnson has won three NBA MVP Awards and three NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Awards. He also played in nine NBA Finals appearances. Johnson was also selected for the All-NBA First Team nine times. Johnson was the league's top player in regular season assists four more times and currently is the NBA's all time leader in average assists per match in the regular season (11.1 assists per team) and during playoffs (12.35 assists per team). He holds the record for most career assists during the playoffs. Johnson was part of the 1992 United States Olympic basketball team ("The Dream Team") which won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona. After leaving the NBA in 1991, Johnson formed the Magic Johnson All-Stars the team that was a wild team that traveled around the globe playing games of exhibition.
