Wiki

A wiki (/'wIki/ (listen) WIK-ee) is an online hypertext website that is collaboratively edited and controlled by its users, by using an internet browser. A typical wiki is comprised of multiple pages for the subjects or the scope of the project. It could be either open to the public or limited to use within an organisation to maintain its own knowledge base.Wikis are made possible through wiki software, also known as wiki engines. Wiki engines are a kind of content management system. They are different from other systems that are web-based, such as blogs in that there isn't a administrator or creator of the content. Wikis also have no particular structure, and they can be altered as needed by the users. Wiki engines typically allow the creation of content with a simplified markup language. Sometimes, it is edited using an editor for rich text. There are many Wikipedia engines to choose from, which can be standalone or integrated with other programs such as bug tracking systems. Certain Wikipedia engines are free and open-source, whereas others are proprietary. Some allow control over different functions (levels or access). Editing rights, for instance can allow you to add, change, or remove material. Others may permit access without the need to enforce access control. To arrange content, different rules might be required.
