The Alchemist (novel)

A Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago imagines a treasure while in a ruined church. A Gypsy fortune-teller clarifies the meaning of his dream that keeps coming back to him. The dream is taken by the woman as a prophecy. She promises the boy that he'll discover an ancient treasure in Egypt's pyramids. Santiago then meets Melchizedek, an old king, or the King of Salem. He requests Melchizedek to buy Santiago's sheep so that he can afford to go to Egypt to complete his "Personal Legend". On his way to Africa, a man who claims to be able to transport Santiago to the Pyramids instead robs him of the money he earned by selling his sheep. Santiago is required to work as a crystal dealer to earn enough money to reach the pyramids. He also meets an Englishman who is searching for an alchemist. Santiago continues his journeys with his new friend. Santiago finds love with Fatima who is an Arabian girl, after they arrive at an oasis. She promises to marry him once the journey is completed. He initially is irritated, but then realizes that real love does not end and must be pursued.
