Santiago Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy, dreamed of finding a treasure in an old church. He seeks out a Gypsy fortune-teller on the meaning of the recurring dream. The woman interprets the dream as a prophecy telling the boy that he will find treasure in the Egyptian pyramids.After Santiago sets out to meet an old King Melchizedek, or the king of Salem, who tells him to let his sheep go in order to travel to Egypt and accomplish his "Personal Legend'. On his way to Africa, a man who claims to be able to take Santiago to the pyramids takes away the money he earned from his flock. Santiago must then work for a crystal merchant so to earn enough to get to the pyramids.Along the journey, he is introduced to an Englishman who has come seeking an alchemist. The two continue their journeys with his new companion. Santiago finds love with Fatima who is an Arabian girl, once they reach an oasis. He promises her that she will marry him after he has completed his journey. At first, he is irritated, but the man learns later that true love doesn't end, nor should one surrender your life to pursue it, as it robs the truth of it.
