A Andalusian shepherd boy called Santiago dreamt of treasures while in a church that has been destroyed. Santiago consults an Gypsy fortune-teller on the meaning of his recurring dream. The woman interprets it as a prophecy, saying to the boy that he will discover a treasure at the Egyptian pyramids.After Santiago sets out for Egypt, he encounters an old king Melchizedek or the king of Salem, who tells him to let his sheep go in order to go to Egypt and fulfill his "Personal Legend'. On his way to Africa there is a man who claims to be able to transport Santiago to the Pyramids instead takes away the money he made from his flock. Santiago is required to become an artisan in the field of crystals to earn enough money to reach the pyramids. On the way, the young man meets an Englishman who has come seeking an alchemist. Santiago continues his travels with his new friend. When they reach an oasis, Santiago is captivated by an Arabian girl known as Fatima who he proposes marriage. He assures her he will be married only when the journey is over. He was frustrated at first but he regretted it later.
