Richard Benjamin Harrison

Harrison and his wife moved from the city of Las Vegas with $5,000 in their savings. In April 1981, Harrison and their three sons relocated to Las Vegas. There, Harrison and Rick established Gold & Silver Coin Shop. The shop was situated at 1501 Las Vegas Boulevard. In 1987, the Harriso received a permit to purchase and sell second-hand goods. Harrison's son Rick writes in his autobiography that he as well as his father had been attempting for a long time to convert the shop into a pawn shop, but the 1955 Las Vegas law limiting pawn licenses to one per fifty thousand residents prohibited this. The city had a population that was more than 200,000 as of 1988. Harrison called the city statistician in order to keep track of the number of residents. In 1989, the city's population reached 250,000, and after some legal struggles to get their pawn license, the Harrisons were granted a pawn license. That year Harrison as well as his father opened the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop located at 713 Las Vegas Boulevard South, just two miles away from the Las Vegas Strip.By 2005, Harrison and his father were loaning out about $3 million per year, which brought them about $700,000 in interest revenue.
