Poland

Poland is a country with a mild transitional climate. The country is located in the Central European Plain, extending across the Baltic Sea in the north up to Sudeten and Carpathian Mountains in the south. The longest Polish river is the Vistula and the highest spot is Mount Rysy, situated in the Tatra mountain range in the Carpathians. Lithuania and Russia share a border with Poland in the north. Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, Czech Republic, and Germany are to the south and west. It shares maritime borders with Denmark and Sweden. The time of human settlement on Polish soil dates back to around 10,000 BC. The region was culturally diverse throughout the late antiquity. It was inhabited by tribes of Polans who gave Poland its name in the early medieval period. In 966 the creation of statehood coincided with the change of a pagan ruler of Polans to Christianity under the auspices of Roman Church. In 1025 the Kingdom of Poland was established. It also began an ongoing connection with Lithuania in 1569. The result was the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was one of the biggest great powers in Europe at the time and had a remarkably liberal political system that adopted Europe's first modern constitution in 1791.
