Mehmet Oz

Son of Turkish immigrants, Oz was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Oz is an American citizen who is a dual citizen of Turkey and the U.S., served 60 days in the Turkish Army in 1980s to protect his Turkish citizenship. He subsequently began his surgical residency at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in the year 1986. In 2001, he became an instructor of surgery at Columbia University, and later retired as professor emeritus 2018. In 2003, Oprah Winfrey was the first guest on the Discovery Channel program Second Opinion with Dr. Oz, and the show was also a regular feature on The Oprah Winfrey Show, making more than 60 appearances. In 2009, The Dr. Oz Show, a daily television show that focuses on medical issues and health issues, was launched by Winfrey's Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television, running for 13 seasons. Oz's support for pseudoscience, including regarding topics such as faith healing, and alternative therapies, has drawn criticism from numerous medical journals and doctors. He ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022 Pennsylvania as a conservative Republican. Oz lost the race to Democratic Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman. Oz was the first Muslim candidate nominated by either major party to run for U.S. Senate.
