The first collection of his poetry, Four Plots for Magnets was published in 1982 by S. K. Kelen at Glandular Press. Long out of print, it was republished (with more prose and poetry) by Pitt Street Poetry in 2013. He co-wrote the screenplay for the film Candy along with director Neil Armfield, based on his novel from 1997 Candy. Heath Ledger stars as Abbie Cornish, and Abbie Hornish as heroin addicts. Davies was addicted to heroin in the year 1990. He also wrote the screenplay for the film of 2020, News of the World, adapted from Paulette Jiles' novel, starring Tom Hanks .Davies is also an editor for The Monthly, and occasional essayist and book reviewer for other newspapers and magazines. In 2010, Davies was awarded the John Curtin Prize in Journalism at the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards, for his essay The Penalty Is Death, which chronicles the prison lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran two drug smugglers who were on Bali's death row. They were executed by firing squad in 2015 which drew public anger. The book for children by his author Magpie was published in the year 2010 by ABC Books.
