John Patrick McEnroe Jr. (born on 16 February 1959) is an American former professional tennis player. His shot-making and volleying abilities, rivalries with Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors and Jimmy Connors, as well as his aggressive on-court behavior were some of his best qualities. He is the only male tennis player who has held the title of world No. McEnroe is the only male tennis player to hold the singles and doubles world No. #1 ranking. Stefan Edberg was the only male athlete to reach No. 1 . in both, though at different times. McEnroe ended his career with singles titles totalling 77 on the ATP Tour and 78 doubles titles. This is the top men's total of the Open Era. He is the only male player to win more than 70 titles in both the men’s singles and men’s doubles categories. He was awarded 25 singles titles on the ATP Champions tour. He also won seven Grand Slam singles titles, four at Wimbledon and three at Wimbledon. He also took home nine Grand Slam men’s doubles titles at Wimbledon and four at the US Open. He also won one Grand Slam mixed doubles title at the French Open. His singles record of 82-3 in 1984 is the highest single-season winning rate of the Open Era.
