John C. Malone

 Malone started his business career in 1963 with Bell Telephone Laboratories (AT&T), where he worked in economic development, planning, and research. In 1968 Malone was hired by McKinsey & Company, and in 1970, he was appointed group vice-president at General Instrument Corporation (GI). He later became the president of Jerrold Electronics a GI subsidiary. For twenty-four years, from 1973 to 1996 Malone was president and CEO of Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI).Malone is on the board of directors for Bank of New York Mellon, Expedia.com, Charter Communications, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. Malone is the chairman emeritus of Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. and chairman of Liberty Global, Inc., and formerly the DirecTV Group. His appointment as chairman of Liberty Global was contentious at times.In 2005, Malone held 32 percent of the shares in the media giant News Corporation, and although only about half of the shares were votes, Rupert Murdoch reportedly had fears that he could lose control over his business to Malone and tried to remove him from the business using the "poison pill" strategy.He was director of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) from 1974 to 1977, then again between 1980 and 1993. Malone served as the treasurer of the NCTA between 1977 and 1978.
