International Women's Day

International Women's Day (IWD), a worldwide holiday, is celebrated on the 8th of March every year. It was established by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28 1909. This inspired German attendees at the 1910 International Socialist Women's Conference to suggest that "a special Women's Day" be organized annually, albeit without a specific date. the following year saw the first protests and celebrations of International Women's Day across Europe. IWD became a national holiday in Soviet Russia on March 8 in 1917, which marked the start of February's Revolution. The holiday was closely associated with extreme-left movements and governments until it was adopted by the feminist movement worldwide in the 1960s. IWD was accepted as a major worldwide holiday after its adoption by the United Nations in 1977.International Women's Day is commemorated in various ways across the globe. It is a public holiday in many nations, and celebrated both by locals or in a social setting in some to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of women. The UN observes the holiday as a result of a specific issue or campaign, or topic on women's rights. IWD is still marked in certain regions of the world with protests and calls for radical changes. In other parts of the world including the West IWD is more sociocultural and focuses on celebrating womanhood.
