Heidi

Two brothers lived in the village of Dorfil. The older wasted the family fortune on drinking and gambling while the younger went away to join the Italian Army in Naples. Tobias returns to his home with his son. The villagers ridicule him and spread rumors about his life in Naples. The man becomes known as The Alm-Uncle, as he lives in seclusion on the mountain Alm. Tobias is a friend of Dete and Adelheid. Dete is a maid at a hotel, is the job Dete receives as she grows older. Adelheid and Tobias marry and work as carpenters. They have a daughter, called Adelheid but affectionately nicknamed Heidi. After the death of Tobias due to a workplace accident, Adelheid succumbs to shock. The Alm-Uncle holds this against God.Heidi is taken care of by her maternal grandparents and Dete lives in Maienfeld. Dete receives the job of a housekeeper at the big city. She takes Heidi five years old to the house of her grandfather's paternal grandparents higher up the mountain Dorfil. ('small village' in Swiss German). He has been at odds with the locals and bitter against God for a long time and now lives in seclusion at the Alm that has earned him the name "The Alm-Uncle.". He initially is resentful at Heidi's appearance, but the girl's evident ability to think for herself and her cheerful, yet unflinching manner soon win him his genuine, though reserved admiration. Heidi eagerly meets her new neighbours, young Peter the goatherd as well as his mother Brigitte and his maternal grandmother who is blind. As each season passes, the mountaintop inhabitants particularly Peter and the grandmother grow more attached to Heidi and she to them. The grandfather won't let Heidi go to school, and is in a fight with the schoolmaster and pastor. Heidi becomes illiterate.
