Greenwell was born in Greenwich, Connecticut, to a French mother and an English father. Before Greenwell was two years of age, her family moved to London's South Kensington neighborhood. She was a student at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art for a year. Greenwell said it was a good experience but she realized she didn't want to go to drama school. Instead, she tried her luck with a pilot season in Los Angeles. Shameless the Emmy-winning Showtime drama, was her first job. This was her first gig at the age of she was just 22 years old. Prior to that she was planning on returning to London. She was thinking of returning to London following the booking of Shameless. Greenwell was forced to lease a car to find an apartment and to reserve Shameless. In the second season, she starred as Mandy Milkovich on Showtime's comedy-drama Shameless. She also was an actor in the series' fourth and fifth seasons. Greenwell also appeared as a regular in the series of The Path, the Hulu drama The Path (2016-2018) and played the lead role in the Starz miniseries The Rook in 2019.
