The majority of the readers is female. The magazine was created by Helene Gordon-Lazareff, her husband Pierre Lazareff in Paris in 1945. The readership of the magazine has steadily expanded since its beginning and grew to reach 800,000 readers across France by the 1960s. Elle editions have since grown exponentially to create a global community of readers and publishers. Elle's Japanese magazine first appeared in 1969. This began the process of expanding internationally. Its first issues in English (US and UK) were launched in 1985.Previous editors of Elle include Jean-Dominique Bauby, well known for his memoirs, and Roberta Myers, the longest-serving editor-in-chief of Elle. After Myers' departure, Nina Garcia is currently the editor-in-chief for Elle.
