Robert Lane Saget was born into a Jewish family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 17, 1956. He was the son of hospital administrator Rosalyn and supermarket chain CEO Benjamin Saget. Early in his life, his family relocated to Norfolk, Virginia, where the young man briefly attended Lake Taylor High School. Later, he would say that his senses of humor were developed as the student who was rebellious at Conservative synagogue Temple Israel in Norfolk. He couldn't find a family in Norfolk which is why he moved to Philadelphia to celebrate his bar mitzvah. Saget would later say that his sense of humor developed when being a rebellious pupil at the Temple Israel the Conservative synagogue located in Norfolk. However, his Honors English teacher was able to recognize his talent and advised him to pursue an acting career.
