William Henry Cosby Jr. (/'kazbior KOZ-bee, born July 12th, 1937) is a popular American comedian, actor and media personality. He was a major contributor to American and African-American culture, and gained a reputation as "America's Dad" for his portrayal of Cliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show (1984-1992). He has been awarded numerous honorary degrees and prizes throughout his career. Many of these were cancelled following allegations of sexual assault against him in 2014. Throughout the decade his stand-up career took off, he released a number of stand-up comedy albums that earned him the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album from 1965 until 1970. He also had a starring part in the crime television show I Spy (1965-1968) opposite Robert Culp. Cosby became a legend when he was awarded the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in the field of Drama Series in 1966, being the first African American to earn an Emmy Award for acting. [1] He continued to act as he starred on The Bill Cosby show, which ran for two seasons from 1969 through 1971.
