In 1972, Williams portrayed Potsie Weber in a segment of the comedy-anthology show Love, American Style titled "Love and the Happy Days", which also introduced Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) as well as Richie's mother Marion (Marion Ross), and other characters who were taken over by the TV show Happy Days. The only characters that were featured were Williams, Howard, Ross and Marion Ross reprised their roles. The series' initial season, during which Williams received second billing after Howard and Ross, was focused primarily on Richie and Potsie. In the end, when breakout character Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler) and Richie's mother, father, and sister became more famous, Potsie was joined by Ralph Malph (Don Most, who was merely a side character in season one) and Potsie and Ralph became inseparable.Unlike Howard and Most, Williams was among the few to remain through the entire run of the show, though his appearances were less frequent in the subsequent seasons. In a few episodes, Richie, Potsie, and Ralph formed a band that played at Arnold's Drive-In, among other places. Williams sang lead vocals as Potsie. Williams's first wife Lorrie Mahaffey was the singer who sang lead vocals in the group.
