Kelly Maria Ripa was born and raised in Berlin New Jersey. She is the daughter of Esther who was a homemaker as well as Joseph Ripa, a labor union president and bus driver who attended Rutgers University. She has an older sister named Linda who is an author of children's books. Prior to the time that Dancing on Air was adopted by USA Network, she was an PHL17 local dancer, referred to as Dancing on Air. Kelly was featured on a variety of ads for chat lines, in which men were asked to dial the hot line , where "hot girls" are always on the line. The commercials were broadcast after midnight in the Philadelphia market. Ripa has three-quarters Italian and one-quarter Irish roots. Ripa was born Catholic. [7][8] Her father has been the Democratic County Clerk of Camden County, New Jersey since June 2009.Ripa graduated from Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees Township, New Jersey. In her high school years she played cheerleading and was encouraged by her drama teacher to study acting. "I am so grateful for my career to Jim Boeckle,"[10] she said. "He believed I was a natural performer and so he gave me the lead in the following show. "[11She appeared in local theatre productions and was discovered while performing in The Ugly Duckling during her senior year. "[9] She attended Camden County College studying psychology However, she dropped out and relocated to New York City to pursue acting as a career.
