When her career in film was not taking off, Fischer took matters into her own hands, writing, directing, and even acting in her own mockumentary, LolliLove which was her sole directing credit. The husband of her James Gunn, along with her co-stars Judy Greer and Lloyd Kaufman were the main actors in the movie. She started participating in The Artist's Way, which is a self-directed creativity seminar in the form of a book. "From doing that book I got the concept... It wasn't supposed to be a film at the time we began it. It was just going to be an improv project to James and me to entertain ourselves with. "[15 With a camera she got from Gunn for her wedding present she recorded improvised interviews with her friends using the style of faux documentary that would later bring her fame on The Office. In an interview, she stated that "I really believe that it was God's will" that she chose to be a part of this format for a year. "It was the super best practice I could have ever received for the possibility of being on the show. "LolliLove" premiered on November 4, 2004 during the St. Louis International Film Festival. The film was shot in Gunn's hometown. Fischer received the Screen Actors Guild Emerging Actor Award for her role in the film. Although the film's contributions to her career, she admitted to an St. Louis arts and entertainment publication that the experience had swayed her from directing again: The acting was exhausting, and writing was difficult. It was hard to direct and perform in a film. Because we had a small team which was small, I was able do many things that a normal director wouldn't be able to perform, like making props, setting up the set and cooking lunch. I was also immersed in character, going over my lines, set dressing for the next shot, instructing an actor as well as working with my DP [cinematographer]. I'm skilled at multitasking, however it was just way too to much for me. I couldn't enjoy each part as much as I would like. I'm sure that I'll continue acting.
