 Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, born July 3, 1962 was an American actor. One of the world's highest-paid actors, he has won numerous awards such as the Honorary Palme d'Or and three Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for three Academy Awards. The films he has acted in have grossed more than four billion dollars in North America and over $11.1 billion globally, making him one of the top-grossing box-office stars ever of all time.Cruise started acting in the early 1980s and gained recognition for his prominent roles in the comedy film Risky Business (1983) and action film Top Gun (1986). The film received acclaim for his performances in the dramas The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988) as well as Born on the Fourth of July (1989). He was nominated to the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Ron Kovic in the film. As a leading Hollywood actor during the 90s, he starred in several films that were commercially successful, including the drama A Few Good Men (1992), the thriller The Firm (1993), the horror film Interview with the Vampire (1994) as well as the romantic film Jerry Maguire (1996). In the latter film the latter, he was awarded a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and received his second Academy Award nomination. Cruise's character as an actor and motivational speaker in Magnolia (1999) brought him another Golden Globe Award and a nomination to the Academy Award. He also was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Artist. Cruise is now a well-known action star who often does risky stunts. From 1996 to 2018, he was Ethan Hunt in six Mission: Impossible films. From 1996 until 2018 He played the role of Ethan Hunt in six Mission Impossible films. Two of his children were adopted by Kidman during his marriage, while the third is an adopted child that he shares with Holmes. Cruise is a vocal advocate of Scientology. He attributes it to aiding him in overcoming dyslexia. In the 2000s the cleric sparked controversy over his critiques of psychiatry as well as anti-depressant medication and his efforts to encourage Scientology in Europe, and an unreleased video interview with Cruise promoting Scientology.
