Allen was born in Denver on the 13th of June 1953. Allen is the third of six children born to Martha Katherine (nee Fox), a community-service worker, and Gerald M. Dick, real estate agent. He is the older brother of two as well as two younger siblings as well as two brothers older. His father died in a car crash in November 1964, after colliding with a drunk driver. Allen was just 11 years old. [1][3] His mother, who was 11 years old, was killed in a car accident in November 1964 after colliding with drunk driver.[2] She then moved to Birmingham, Michigan with her six children, so that she could be closer to her husband and three kids. [4] Allen claimed that the reason for moving was to move from being at an enviable school to be at [the bottom] of the social ladder at a different school. Allen attended Seaholm High School, Birmingham. He enjoyed music and theater classes. This led to his love for classical piano. He later was a student at Central Michigan University before transferring to Western Michigan University in 1974. He graduated in 1974. Allen was an undergraduate student at Western Michigan University and worked for the WIDR radio station. In 1976 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in communication, with a focus in television and radio production along with a split minor in design and philosophy.
