Giannulli was born in Encino, California. His birthplace was the city of Encino, California. He was enrolled in the College of Continuing Education, which was a program accessible to students of all ages "with no formal admissions conditions". However the student was allowed to reside within the Beta Theta Pi fraternity home as per the fraternity's spokesperson is because it was not uncommon for students who were not matriculating to be associated with the fraternity.
