Marilyn Monroe (/'maer@lIn m@n'roU/ born Norma Jeane Mortenson; June 1, 1926 - August 4, 1962) was an American actress. She is best known for her humorous "blonde-bombshell" role. This made Monroe one of the most famous symbols of sex in the 1950s and 1960s. It was also an emblem of the sexual revolution. Monroe was an actress of the top bill for a decade, and her films grossed around $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2021) by the time of her death in 1962. 3 Monroe remains a major icon of pop culture long after her demise. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her sixth on their list of the most influential female screen legends of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Multiple film critics and media outlets have cited Monroe as being among the top actors who have never received an Academy Award nomination. Monroe was born in Los Angeles and spent her childhood in 12 foster homes and an orphanage. She married when she was sixteen. When World War II broke out the Monroe was employed in an industrial facility. The photographer she met was from First Motion Picture Unit. This led to a short-lived career as a pin-up model. In late 1950, after several small roles in films, she signed an agreement with Fox. Over the next two years, she was a popular actress with roles in several comedies, including As Young as You Feel and Monkey Business, and in the dramas Clash by Night and Don't Have the Nerve to Knock. The actress was the subject of controversy after it was revealed she had posed for nude photographs prior to becoming an actress however, the scandal did not damage her career, but instead brought more attention to her films.
