She was born in Phoenix. Her father has English and has Scots Irish family and her mother is Mexican and Spanish. Her siblings include one brother, Vincent and a sister named Pamela. Carter was just 5 years old when she made her TV debut on Lew Kings Talent Show. During high school, Carter performed in a band called Just Us. The group performed marimba and a conga drum. They also played an acoustic guitar as well as a stand up bass, which was played by a different member of the group. Lynda began singing at a local pizza restaurant when she was just 15. Seven years later, when she was 16 years old, she joined two of her cousins in a band called The Relatives. The actor Gary Burghoff was the drummer for the group. The band first performed at the Sahara Hotel and Casino lounge in Las Vegas for three months as Carter was under 21 she was required to go through the kitchen.Carter was a student at Arizona State University. She was named "Most gifted" and decided to get into music. Carter was a candidate for an audition in 1970. She performed on tour with The Garfin Gathering's bandleader Howard (Speedy), Garfin. Their first concert with each other was held at the Holiday Inn Chinatown, a San Francisco hotel so new that it had no sidewalk access. They played mostly to guests and hotel staff who parked their vehicles in the underground. [9] The Garfin Gathering toured the Nevada "Silver Circuit" and performed shows in a variety of state's casino lounges between Lake Tahoe, Carson City, Reno, and Las Vegas. Carter left the Garfin Gathering to pursue acting in 1972 and was able to return to Arizona.
