Lucy Lawless

Lawless was well-known for her portrayal of Xena, a fierce warrior girl. The role was aired during the first season. She first appeared in the episode "The Warrior Princess" that aired on March 1995. R. J. Stewart was one Pacific Renaissance Pictures' inhouse writers. He adapted a story Robert G. Tapert had requested John Schulian to create the teleplay. The character became popular with fans. Vanessa Angel was originally cast for the role, however she was ill and unable to go to New Zealand for shooting. Lawless had her hair dyed black to differentiate between her character and Lysia. The hair she wore was originally ash blonde. She also wore a much darker outfit. Lawless returned in the role of Xena in two more episodes of the initial season of Hercules in which she portrayed her transition from being a villainess to a good, heroic character. The character was popular enough that a spin-off television series was developed: Xena: Warrior Princess debuted on 4 September 1995. Xena: Warrior Princess, like the show it was based on was a huge success and enjoyed high ratings and the attention of the public for six seasons. The series garnered Lawless an immense amount of attention and she was a global celebrity. While filming an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in October 1996, Lawless suffered a fractured pelvis after the horse she was riding lost its balance in the car park of the studio. She made a complete recovery however, several episodes of the second season of Xena were revised to focus on the background characters, reducing the amount of time Lawless was to be on set.
