Lawless was best known for her character Xena, a fierce warrior girl. The role was aired in the first season. She first appeared in the episode "The Warrior Princess" that aired in March 1995. R. J. Stewart was one of Pacific Renaissance Pictures's in-house writers. He took a story and adapted it for television. Robert G. Tapert had sought John Schulian to create the script for the teleplay. The character was an instant hit with fans. Vanessa Angel was initially cast in the role. However, she was sick and was unable to go to New Zealand to film. To distinguish between Xena and the aforementioned Lysia Lawless, her hair, initially a blonde ash color, was dyed black. She also wore a much darker outfit. Lawless returned in the role of Xena for two episodes in the second season of Hercules. The show showed the transformation of her from villain to a strong, heroic character. The character became so well-known that a spin-off series was created: Xena: Warrior Princess was launched on September 4, 1995. Xena: Warrior Princess was an instant hit and ran for six seasons. The show received great ratings and was regarded as a cultural phenomenon. Lawless was a major star and the series garnered her plenty of interest. In the month of October, 1996, Lawless was appearing on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. While filming, Lawless broke her pelvis after her horse in the parking lot of the studio was unable to stand. She made a complete recovery however, several episodes of the second season of Xena were revised to focus on background characters to minimise the time Lawless was to be on set.
