Elizabeth Berkley

Berkley has left Saved by the Bell in the hope of pursuing an acting career in the film industry. She was chosen to play Nomi Malone in Paul Verhoeven's controversial film Showgirls (1995). The sexually explicit film was given a rating of NC-17 in the United States. It was the first film with a big budget to receive the rating. The critics were not happy with the film. Berkley's performance Berkley received a poor review. The reviewer for Variety's Todd McCarthy described it as "harsh and unglamorous" as well as Janet Maslin, of The New York Times stated that Berkley appeared like a balloon-like party doll with "the eyes wide-mouthed, vacant look like balloon dolls". Berkley was said to have made an "tempestuous" departure from Creative Artists Agency. She was in meetings with William Morris Agency, United Talent Agency and ICM. ICM signed her. Berkley was cast as an actor in The First Wives Club in January 1996. The film starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton. In the film, which was an independent production The Real Blonde, she was Tina who was a Madonna body-double. Berkley played the lead role in the animated film Armitage III Poly Matrix. She also landed parts in films such as The Taxman, Tail Lights Fade and the critically acclaimed Roger Dodger. In 1999, she appeared performing on stage with Eddie Izzard and played Honey in the London stage version of Lenny.
