Cassandra Peterson

Cassandra Peterson [1] was born September 17, 1951. She is an American actor. Her most well-known role is her role as the character of horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the dark. Peterson gained fame on Los Angeles television station KHJ-TV as her stage character Elvira hosting Elvira's Movie Macabre, a weekly B movie presentation. A member of Los Angeles-based improvisational and sketch comedy troupe The Groundlings, Peterson based her Elvira persona in part on a "Valley girl"-type persona she developed when she was a part of the group. Elvira's Movie Macabre was so popular that Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) and Elvira's Haunted Hills (2001) were produced. Peterson starred as Elvira. Elvira hosted public domain films and the show was telecast on This TV from 2010 to 2011. Elvira returned as a hostess for horror on 13 Nights of Elvira in 2014. The show was a 13-episode series that was produced and hosted by Hulu. A special 40th Anniversary Special aired on Shudder in 2021. Peterson has made cameo appearances as Elvira in numerous TV and film shows, including appearing as a guest commentator for WrestleMania 2 and as a judge for RuPaul's Drag Race and Halloween Wars.
