Bryant was born on May 5, 1982 in Los Angeles, California. Her parents are from Mexican descent. When she was a child when her parents divorced. Following her parents' divorce the father of her biological mother moved to Baja California. Sophie is the older sibling of Sophie. Her mother was a shipping clerk for an electronics firm. Her mother got married to Stephen Laine in 1990. He was also a middle-manager at the electronics company she worked for. Following her wedding, she began to go by the name Laine and changed her name to Vanessa Marie Laine. She was not adopted by her stepfather. She resided with Robert Laine, her step-grandfather and step-grandfather in Huntington Beach, California. Her home was owned by her family in Garden Grove. She attended Marina High School.In August 1999, Bryant and her friend Rowena Ireifej went to an event featuring hip-hop at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. A firm approached them and offered them the opportunity to work as music video extras or backup dancers. Bryant later appeared in music videos of artists including Krayzie Bone and Snoop Dogg.Her mother chaperoned her on the shoots.In November 1999, Bryant met her future husband Kobe Bryant on the set of the music video for the song "G'd Up." The couple's high-profile romance caused disruptions at the high school where she was enrolled, which led Bryant to complete her senior year in the home as an independent study. She graduated high school in 2000 with a high mark.
