The Alchemist (novel)

A Andalusian shepherd boy called Santiago dreams of treasures while in a ruined church. Santiago consults an Gypsy fortune-teller about the meaning of the recurring dream. The dream is taken by the woman as a prophecy, and promises the boy that he will find an ancient treasure in the pyramids of Egypt. Santiago then meets Melchizedek the old king or the King of Salem. He asks Melchizedek to purchase Santiago's sheep to enable him to go to Egypt to complete his "Personal Legend". A man claims to be capable of taking Santiago to the pyramids, but instead robs him from the cash he earned from his sheep. Santiago is forced to work as a crystal merchant to make enough money to get to the pyramids. He also encounters an Englishman, who comes looking for an alchemist. Santiago continues his journeys with his new friend. When they reach an oasis Santiago meets and falls in love with an Arabian girl called Fatima who he proposes marriage. She promises to marry him once the trip is complete. He initially gets frustrated, but soon realizes that true love isn't over and needs to be pursued.
