Oprah Winfrey

Winfrey was born in Milwaukee, but she was born in poverty to a single mom living in rural Mississippi. She claims that she was molested in her youth and teens. At 14, Winfrey became pregnant. The child was born prematurely, and died in early childhood. Winfrey was transferred to Nashville, Tennessee to live with Vernon Winfrey. She was an anchor on the radio for the local news at night and was also a co-anchor. Winfrey's often emotional, extemporaneous performance eventually led to her transfer to the daytime talk-show industry as well as boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to the top spot, she started her own production company.By the mid-1990s, Winfrey had reinvented her show to focus on literature, self-improvement, mindfulness, and spirituality. Though she was criticised for her controversial ideas on self-help and encouraging a confessional-style society, Winfrey has been praised for her ability to overcome challenges and to become a patron. In fact she was honored by President Obama presented Winfrey the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. In 2008, she formed her own network, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
