It's 1954 in Austin, Texas, and a pregnant Nadine Hightower (Kim Basinger) is in a lot of trouble. The photographer is sleazy. Raymond Escobar's (Jerry Stiller) studio to steal photographs from him, claiming that they're "lots more creative than I expected." Escobar assures her that he is Hugh Hefner, and that she will make it to the top. Nadine however, has doubts. She would like to see her photographs and, when she returns to the studio to retrieve them she finds herself in a tense murder scene. She grabs an envelope with her name on it and hightails it out of there.Unfortunately, she gets the wrong images. She takes plans to build a new highway and it ends in Vernon Bridges her husband who is estranged from her. Vernon is a handsome and wise-mouthed man who runs the Blue Bonnet bar. No one ever goes there. But that's not the only thing. He's playing with an old Pecan Queen, who is employed by the Lone Star Brewing company (Glenne Headly). He believes there is the possibility to make a lot of money out of this.
