The son of Turkish immigrants, Oz was raised in Wilmington, Delaware, and graduated from Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. Oz is a dual citizen of Turkey and the U.S., served 60 days in the Turkish Army in 1980s to protect his Turkish citizenship. In 1986, he began his residency as a surgeon at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He was made a Professor of Surgery at Columbia University in 2001 and was resigned as a professor emeritus in the year 2018. The Dr. Oz Show was developed by Winfrey's Harpo Productions, and Sony Pictures Television in 2009. It ran for 13 seasons. Oz's promotion of pseudoscience, including topics like alternative treatments, faith healing and other paranormal beliefs and beliefs, has drawn criticism from a number of medical publications and doctors.
